About Dawn

Dawn IsraelCompton

MA, CCC  ·  Founder, Blossom Counselling  ·  Edmonton, AB

I'm so glad you're here. I've been supporting children, teens, adults and families in the Edmonton area since 2005, and I opened Blossom Counselling because I believe everyone deserves a space where they can feel safe, understood and hopeful about what comes next.

My training began at the Stollery Children's Hospital and later deepened at Catholic Social Services, where I worked with high-risk children and youth. Since 2009, I've worked in Employee and Family Assistance and private practice, broadening my work to include individual adults alongside families and children.

My Philosophy

Research tells us the most important factor in predicting success in therapy isn't the modality — it's the quality of the relationship between therapist and client. That finding has guided my work from the beginning. My greatest strength as a counsellor has always been forming genuine connection with people of any age.

My first goal with every client is to create an environment that feels safe, comfortable, nurturing and hopeful. From there, we work together. Therapy, as I practice it, isn't about changing other people or trying to control what's outside your control. It's about recognizing what is within your power to change and using that energy well.

I want clients to leave our work together with real, practical skills they can use — skills that help them express themselves, manage what's hard, and live closer to the life they want.

Working with Children

Working with children and youth is where my heart has always been. Children deserve respect, and they need a voice in their own lives. Within my work with young people, I support children in finding new ways to express their thoughts, feelings and dreams.

Part of that work always involves the family. Helping children and their caregivers communicate more effectively with one another is one of the most meaningful things I do. When families learn to understand each other better, something shifts — and that shift ripples through everything.

I also work comfortably with adults on life transitions, relationship issues, grief, stress, self-esteem and more. If you're looking for counselling in Edmonton and you're not sure whether I'm the right fit, just reach out. We'll figure it out together.

How I Work

Genuine Connection First

Before anything else, I focus on building a relationship where you feel truly seen and heard. I approach every client with kindness, curiosity and respect — and without judgment. You don't have to worry about feeling awkward or embarrassed. We will develop a rapport over time and figure it out together.

Collaborative and Client-Led

I don't arrive with a fixed plan. We work together to understand what you're experiencing and what you're hoping for. I draw on your existing strengths, knowledge and life experience — because you already have more resources than you may realize. My job is to help you find and use them.

Evidence-Informed and Integrative

I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches depending on what makes sense for each person. These include CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, Person-Centred approaches, Mindfulness-Based methods, Narrative Therapy, Art Therapy, Attachment-Based work, Connected & Positive Parenting approaches, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Psychodynamic approaches.

Practical Skills You Can Use

Skills building is an important part of my work with children, youth and adult clients. I want you to leave our sessions with concrete tools you can apply in real life — techniques that support the change you're looking for. Insight matters, but so does having something practical to reach for when things get hard.

"Safety is not just the absence of fear — it is also the presence of connection."
— Stephen Porges

Areas of Specialization

I work with children, youth and adults across a wide range of concerns. If you don't see your situation here, please reach out — I may still be a good fit, or I can help connect you with someone who is.
