What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?

Clarity about how a student learns.

A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that helps gain a deeper understanding of a student's educational abilities and needs. It looks at both strengths and areas of challenge across cognitive ability, academic skills, attention and behaviour.

The results provide families with a clearer picture of why a student may be struggling — and give schools the documentation they need to act. It's not just about identifying problems. It's about building a path forward.

Is an Assessment Right for Us?

Signs an assessment may be helpful.

An assessment is worth considering when a student's challenges in school can't be easily explained — or when their abilities seem to go well beyond what the classroom is offering.

Academic Difficulties

A student is struggling with core academic skills — reading, writing or math — despite effort and support. The gap between their potential and their performance is noticeable and persistent.

Attention & Focus Concerns

Difficulties sustaining attention, staying organized, completing tasks or managing impulses are getting in the way of learning — at school, at home, or both. You want to understand what's driving it.

Behavioural Challenges

Maladaptive behaviour at school or home is affecting a student's relationships and learning. An assessment helps clarify whether underlying learning differences or processing challenges are contributing.

Exceptional Ability

A student may be demonstrating abilities well beyond their grade level and needs more of a challenge. An assessment can confirm giftedness and support conversations with the school about enrichment or acceleration.

"Every child deserves a champion — an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best they can possibly be." Rita Pierson
What the Assessment Covers

A thorough, structured evaluation.

The assessment is individualized to the student's needs and may include evaluation across several key areas.

Cognitive Ability

Evaluation of overall intellectual ability, processing speed, working memory and reasoning skills — building a picture of how a student thinks and learns.

Academic Skills

Assessment of reading, writing and mathematics abilities relative to age and grade expectations, identifying specific areas of strength and challenge.

Attention & Behaviour

Standardized rating scales and observations to assess attention, executive functioning and behavioural patterns that may be affecting learning and social functioning.
